We are looking at a drawing today in charcoals, inks, etc…

With the artists description added, we have no choice but to give the rating of 3 ½ which is not too bad, seeing as with us the lower the vision the better, because I was able to remove one full star seeing as the individual viewer can interpret “spirit” in many different ways, which will better allow the viewer to adapt the image to their own beliefs or lack of.

Another reason I am going with the lower vision here, is because the image does not really fit my Judeo-Christian mindset of what “Spirit” would look like, but when examined, I could see a native American vision, or a pagan vision, or a Buddhist vision, which reassures me that the artist also sees the viewer as examining their own “spirit”, and applying it to the artists vision.

A 4 ½ is as good as we can get originality, because even though the image itself is unique, the idea is not so much. Granted the idea itself is rather scarce on the list, ergo the loss here is only a ½ star.

The reason we are going 4 ½ as opposed to the expected 3 ½ to 4 is because of the medium. If this had been a photograph of some sort, it would be lucky to have the 3 ½, if paint it would be lucky to see the 4. But because of the charcoals, pencil, inks, it gets the max and that half-star. Here at dA, we do see drawing, but it is very scarce in charcoal, and even less when combined with ink, so this artist teeters dangerously close to perfection, because of the artist going with what the artist has, and “working it”. The popular mediums and tools are ok, but it is nice to see an artist throw a number of things into their bucket, and dumping it all out on to a table for producing a piece.

Now we run into a problem… I am going with 4 ½ for technique for the same reasons I did in originality, but I have an issue that I will have to vent in “impact”, because technique will not be the place for correction in my opinion.

Oh and here comes the 2 ½ for impact, but why? What happened? We just drooled everywhere, and now we are balking?

Put your hand over the “spirit” when you look at the picture, and what do you see? Consistency, fluidity, serenity, stillness… But when you remove your hand, you see anarchy, you see lack of order, and you see an imbalance of freedom and order, the color just doesn’t do it for me. I would like to have seen the spirit in white, just like the body, seeing as the spirit is a part of, not an extension of, in my opinion. The focus is robbed from the body, which cannot be the point of the spirit leaving the body, or the body would serve no purpose in the image because of its disposability.

The body is absolute perfection; those shadows in the dress are as realistic, and as believable as a photograph of that dress would be. Which is why I shrink away from the image of the spirit, because everything about it is “out of place” to me. I would like to see this image tried again, or revamped to convert the spirit to white only, and then see what it looks like.

Overall the image is good, it is original, the vision allows for the viewer to project successfully, the technique is spot on, it is simply the chaos of the spirit itself that caused me to lash out against it in the impact of the image on me.
